Oral manifestations in a group of adults with autism spectrum disorder

2011

Objective: A number of studies have evaluated the oral health of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), though most have involved children, and no specific oral manifestations have been described. The present study describes the buccodental disorders and hygiene habits in a group of adults with ASD. Study Design: A prospective case-control study was made of a group of patients with ASD (n=30), with a mean age of 27.7 +/- 5.69 years, and of a healthy age-and gender-matched control group (n=30). An evaluation was made of the medical history, medication, oral hygiene habits and oral diseases, with determination of the CAOD, CAOS and OHI-S oral hygiene scores. Results: Most of the patien…

Prenatal and postnatal insecticide use and infant neuropsychological development in a multicenter birth cohort study

2013

There is little evidence about exposure to currently used insecticides during early life periods and adverse effects on child neuropsychological development. The aim of this study is to examine the association between residential insecticide use during pregnancy and infancy, and the development of children.Study subjects were participants in the INMA (Environment and Childhood) Project, a Spanish multicenter birth cohort study. Prenatal and postnatal use of indoor insecticides and other variables were obtained from personal interview during pregnancy and infancy. Mental and psychomotor development was assessed around 14 months using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. The associations …

Cutaneous, genital and oral lichen planus: a descriptive study of 274 patients

2018

Background Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the oral mucosa as well as the skin, genital mucosa and other sites. Objective: to evaluate the correlation between oral, genital and cutaneous lichen planus, in a sample of LP patients. Material and Methods This descriptive study reviewed 274 clinical histories of patients, who all presented histological confirmation of lichen planus verified by a pathologist, attending research centers in Barcelona. Results A total of 40 LP patients (14.59%) presented genital lesions. Of 131 patients with cutaneous LP (47.8%), the most commonly affected zones were the body’s flexor surfaces, representing 60.1% of cases. 24% of pati…

Oral Manifestations of Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome: Genotype-Phenotype Correlation Analysis

2020

Background: Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a rare disease caused by deletion in the distal moiety of the short arm of chromosome 4. The objectives of this study were to report the most representative oral findings of WHS, relate them with other clinical characteristics of the disease, and establish possible phenotype-genotype correlation. Methods: The study was conducted at 6 reference centers distributed throughout Spain during 2018&ndash

ORAL MANIFESTATIONS IN GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE

2005

The gastroesophageal reflux (passage of gastric contents into the oesophagus and the mouth) is the main sign/symptom of a very frequent gastroesophageal reflux disease. Thus, acid regurgitation originates from stomach and it is responsible of the onset of tipical symptoms and mucosal injury. Also in oral cavity the noxious acid agent is able to injure oral cavity (soft and hard tissues). These involvementes are described from international literature, even if a greater interest has shown to date only for hard tissue injury.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN HELYCOBACTER PYOLRI INFECTION AND PATHOLOGICAL ORAL MANIFESTATIONS

2016

DATA FROM LITERATURE ARE CONTROVERSAL REGARDING THE PRESENCE OF bELICOBACTER PYLORI (HP) IN DENTAL PLAQUE AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH GASTRIC INFECTION. oNE OF THE POSSIBLE MECHANISMS SUGGETSED FOR RE-INFECTION IS THE RECOLONIZATION WITH HP DENTAL PLAQUE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW WAS TO DETERMINE WHETHER DENTAL PLAQUE, POOR ORAL HYGIENE, AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE WERE RISK FACTORS FOR HP INFECTION.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw in the era of targeted therapy and immunotherapy in oncology

2019

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a well-known pathological condition in oncology derived from the use of bisphosphonates (BPs) and denosumab. Many molecular and immunological targets have been introduced for daily use in cancer treatment in recent years; consequently, new cases of ONJ have been reported in association with these drugs, especially if administered with BPs and denosumab. When the drugs are administered alone, ONJ is rarely seen. The objective of our study was to analyze the recent literature relative to the association of ONJ with these new drugs highlighting the pathogenic, clinical and therapeutic aspects. The close collaboration between maxillofacial surgeon, oncologist, …

Oral manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus. A systematic review

2017

Background: Diabetes Mellitus has become a global epidemic and presents many complications, usually proportional to the degree and duration of hyperglycemia. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the different oral manifestations associated with Diabetes Mellitus. Material and Methods: A MEDLINE search for “Diabetes Mellitus and oral manifestations” was performed. A further search was conducted for “diabetes” and its individual oral manifestation. Inclusion criteria were as follows: human clinical studies with a minimum of 30 patients; studies published in relevant scientific journals between January 1998 and January 2016. Nineteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and…

O impacto da história de sintomas psicóticos na função cognitiva de doentes bipolares eutímicos: comparação com doentes esquizofrênicos e controles s…

2011

BACKGROUND: About two-thirds of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) have a lifetime history of at least one psychotic symptom. Objective: To compare the neurocognitive performance of four groups: BD patients with and without a history of psychotic symptoms (BD HPS+ and BD HPS-, respectively); patients with schizophrenia (SZ); and healthy control (HC) subjects. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 35 stabilized patients with SZ, 79 euthymic (44 HPS+ and 35 HPS-) patients with BD, and 50 HC were administered a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests. RESULTS: There was worse neurocognitive functioning in both BD and SZ patients compared to HC. Overall, data from both groups of BD …
